Description

Great Egret Growing Breeding Plumage in Winter. Most Great Egrets did not display breeding plumage when photographed at this time of year, but this bird already had some of the long, feathery plumes known as “aigrettes.” Hunting to obtain these plumes nearly led to the birds’ extinction until plume-hunting was banned early in the 20th century.
