Reeds Blowing in the Wind At Bombay Hook Salt Marsh. These common reeds, Phragmites australis, were growing along the east side of Bombay Hook’s Wildlife Drive. The common reed, Phragmites australis, is found in marsh systems worldwide. There are several subspecies of Phragmites australis in North America, but they are difficult to distinguish. Some subspecies are native to North America, but one is thought to be of European origin. It is considered an invasive species that grows rapidly, especially in disturbed areas such as roadsides, and degrades wetland wildlife habitat.
