Description

Along the Alaskan coastline, salmon is essential for brown bears to survive. When there's a lack of fish, bears will often conserve their energy and patiently wait for the next wave of salmon to come through. However, certain coastal brown bears have learned that they can find clams during the low tide - This sow was doing exactly that. On one of the most stunning sun rises I've been lucky enough to witness, I watched as this sow slowly worked the tidal flats and dug up clams in the sand. She would walk a few yards and sniff them out with her excellent sense of smell. She had three cubs who would follow in her footsteps and eat the leftover clams she would leave them.
