Description

I saw this crustose lichen growing on big rocks on the downward rocky slope of a mountain at 10,100 feet above sea level, alongside the scenic Beartooth Highway in northwest Wyoming. This type of lichen grows at high alpine elevations; and, it's known to be slow-growing and long-lived. Most crustose lichen grow only 1-2 mm. in diameter every year, in fact (and, since it takes 25.4 millimeters to make up an inch, that's pretty slow-growing).
