Description

The Pine Squirrel, or Chickaree, is one of the four common squirrel species in Rocky Mountain National Park. These squirrels feed only on pine cones, often storing them in large heaps deep in the shaded areas of the forest. Chickarees are very territorial and will defend their turf with loud vocalizations. You will hear them often when you hike through their backyard.
